AH: Breitling has made significant strides in sustainability. Could you share the brand’s key milestones in this journey and how they align with your long-term sustainability goals?
Aurelia Figueroa: Thank you, Alessandra. It’s great to meet you and I appreciate your time for this interview. We have several ambitious targets, which we outline in our 2024 Sustainability Mission Report. Among them, I’d like to highlight a few key achievements. First, ensuring full traceability of our materials is a priority. By March 2026, our goal is to have fully traceable gold and diamonds. So far, we’ve achieved traceability for one-third of our collection, a major accomplishment that required reworking our supply chains entirely.
Additionally, we’ve established community-based value chains, moving beyond traditional commodity-based sourcing. Through our Better Gold Premium Fund, we are funding the education of 27 students in a Colombian community six hours north of Medellín. This initiative, along with our Better Diamond Fund, also supports women’s economic empowerment. Moreover, our climate targets have been validated by the Science-Based Targets Initiative, reinforcing our commitment across the supply chain. For further details, we can provide the full report.
AH: Sustainability is a broad concept. What does it mean specifically for Breitling, and how is the company integrating it into every aspect of its operations?
Aurelia Figueroa: We approach sustainability from a value creation perspective. This means embedding sustainability into our business strategy, ensuring resilience, and creating shared value across our supply chains. Rather than treating it as an isolated effort, we incorporate it into our strategic decision-making.
AH: How does Breitling balance the demand for luxury and exclusivity with the growing need for sustainable and ethical practices in the industry?
Aurelia Figueroa: Our approach is rooted in responsible sourcing. We took a pioneering step by actively engaging in artisanal and small-scale mining in Latin America and transitioning to lab-grown diamonds. These decisions reflect our commitment to sustainability while maintaining our luxury identity. Our 2024 Sustainability Mission Report highlights these efforts as part of Breitling’s 140-year legacy of innovation.
AH: Circular economy principles are gaining traction in various industries. How is Breitling approaching product lifecycle management, including recycling and upcycling of its materials?
Aurelia Figueroa: This is crucial for our sustainability strategy. We have introduced upcycled packaging made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials. Another key initiative is our certified pre-owned program, launched in partnership with Buguga. Additionally, our Rewind program in France reintroduces vintage and second-hand watches to the market, reinforcing our commitment to circularity.
AH: What legacy do you hope to leave in terms of sustainability at Breitling, and what impact would you like the brand to have on the global conversation about responsible luxury?
Aurelia Figueroa: I hope to leave a legacy of collaboration, transparency, and accountability. Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and being part of Breitling’s pioneering spirit has been an honor. Our commitment to these values ensures a lasting impact.
AH: Thank you, Aurelia, for sharing your insights. It’s inspiring to see how Breitling is redefining luxury through sustainability.
